The General Business Case for Charging-as-a-Service (ChaaS).

This study defines and examines the general business case for charging-as-a-service (ChaaS). ChaaS providers serve an intermediary role between entities in the transportation system (fleets, residences) and electricity providers to achieve all-around benefit. As detailed in the diagram in Figure 2, ChaaS providers simplify, consolidate, and manage the flow of power, data, price signals, payments, and communications between the transportation and electric power systems.

In the study we examined four case studies of ChaaS: a detached residence, a multi-unit dwelling, a parking arrangement for a retail business, and depots for commercial fleets. One analysis outcome for the commercial fleet case study is shown in Figure 3. By coordinating and pooling the usage of common charging and energy storage resources, in addition to leveraging tax incentives for zero-emission operation, a simulated ChaaS provider can reduce costs for all involved.
